If you’ve spent time in Ann Arbor, you know Fleetwood Diner. It’s where nights end (or begin). Where students, townies, artists, and insomniacs share counter space and stories. First bites after last call. Snowy mornings. Hungover brunches. Quiet solo coffees. All of it.

This artwork is my tribute to that beloved, no-frills landmark — the stainless steel, the sticker-covered windows, the glow that says open when you need it most. Fleetwood isn’t trying to be cool. It just is. And it’s been holding court in Ann Arbor for decades.

As a University of Michigan grad, places like this are stitched into the fabric of my life. Fleetwood is more than a diner — it’s a constant. A place that doesn’t change much, even as everything around it does. That matters.

This black-and-white inkwash illustration captures its gritty charm, its welcoming glow, and its beautifully imperfect personality — a place where everyone belongs, especially at odd hours. These prints are made from an original piece I did that ran in the Ann Arbor Observer as one of my "Minor Landmarks" series.

About Fleetwood Diner

Opened in 1949 from a prefab diner kit and called the "Dag-Wood", the Fleetwood has become one of Ann Arbor’s most enduring institutions. Known for its 24-hour service (in spirit, if not always in practice), its famously messy and delicious Hippie Hash, and its anything-goes clientele, it’s long been a cultural crossroads for the city — equal parts comfort food joint and community hub.
